Scout Camp Recreation
This is something that's been percolating for a while, and I wanted to get some feedback before I start prowling arts-n-crafts stores trying to get supplies on the cheap.
So, as you may or may not know, many of the Gathering attendees are former Scouts of various stripes. One of the big joys of Scout camp, to me, was all the goofy funky arts-n-crafts stuff we did. Tie-dyeing, sand candles, ice candles, regular dip candles (okay, so candles got done a lot), "friendship" bracelets... the works.
So what I'm looking for is:
Who all would be interested in this kind of stuff?
What particular activities do we want to do? I know I'm /all/ about the tie-dye, but beyond that, I'm pretty flexible.
Are there other artsy-craftsy things people would like to do that I've forgotten to list?

Hot Martha Stewart Action!
Thorn, respectfully, I'll decline on the grounds that in school the only arts-and-crafts I did was with running around with a gluegun, gluing my godbrother's head to a table. Or making a bit of clay pottery with a airbubble in the middle so it would explode when baked and take out most of the "artwork" with it.

Um, I have exactly zero fine motor skills. I enjoy arts and craftsy type things sometimes, but I don't see much use in them, since everything I make turns out entirely messed up.

You could always issue Super-Soakers loaded with clorine bleach and goggles, then run around and "tye-die" each other while also having a fun shoot out....
...until the fumes overcame you and passed out, of course.

Seeing as how I missed out when I was little (no girl scouts around, no siblings to glue to tables) I am down with arts and crafts. The cornier, the better.
One time I built a matter transporter, but things got screwed up (long story, lol) and I ended up turning into a kind of half-human, half-housefly monstrosity.
I'm all for tie-dye, and got the stock of 50% off Jo-ann's coupons on the desk I can do corny friendship braclets (funnily enough, its called fingerloop braiding and it dates back to like 700 AD, I know like 14 different kinds now from an SCA class). Tissue paper flowers, monofilamnet beading junk, find one of those cool machines where you spin paper around at exceedly high speeds, and start dripping paint into it to make bizarre designs...

Oh ... crud.
Whatever you do, get the friendship bracelet thing out of the way before my girls show up...
...I think I still have the tacky, girlish beads dangling from my keychain from a project such as this when Rene'e was 2...
...I can just imagine me wearing friendship bracelets from my daughters for the next two years...
I haven't even worn a wedding ring in over a year... (I'm trying to make the scar go away.)

Well I have more DMC floss than anyone really needs for bracelets, though I may experiement with the wire I've got to see if it will work, harder on the fingers but much cooler results.
I was never real good with the popsicle stick thing, something about a lack of patience. I do have lots of other nifty things like cel painting and glass etching supplies, though, and tons of Sculpty clay that bakes hard...

Ok, I have taught VBS and ran several programs at the YMCA. I have crafts out the ass. Tie-die will rock. I'll help with some others, I suppose. At this point in time I'd rather 'instruct' than 'do' unless it's something particularly cool, though.

Is that when you attach razor blades to the kites and have kite dogfights?Wildfire wrote: Stunt kite time...
That was always fun--just watch out when they come crashing down!!

No, that's kite-fighting, and they used glue and crushed crystal IIRC. But, no, because its expensive and phenominally stupid should you want to keep you kite for more than a few hours.
Stunt kites are usually delta wings with tails and double handles for steering, so you can do dives, corkscrews, etc.

*Thorn hauls mightily upon the thread steering wheel trying to veer it back on course.*
Okay. While all this commentary has been entertaining, it really hasn't much helped me figure out what level of interest there is in doing crafty-things, much less which crafty-things got the most "votes" and so forth. So for those of you who aren't interested, that's cool. And now, in the politest way I possibly can, I respectfully ask you "Not Interested Folks" to take your commentary to some other thread.
The stuff I'm talking about, and the stuff I'm preparing to go supply-shopping for, has nothing to do with kites, rockets, or any of that other stuff. Which is not to say you can't also do those things (I may be interested myself). But please, if someone really is interested in doing some model rocket building (or whatever), open a new thread? Thanks.
Here's what I'm contemplating:
Tie-dying
Candle making
Macrame "friendship" bracelets (14 different types, Wildfire?!?! Cool!!!)
Lanyards
Beading (I've been thinking about buying a bead loom forever anyway)
"Friendship" pins
Ceramics (playing with clay)
Tissue paper flowers (Wildfire, I'm intrigued by this)
Painting things?? (I'm horrible at painting, so this will sooo be someone else's gig)
Origami
Batiking??
Okay, any other suggestions? What are opinions on these suggestions? Can I have the "Interested Folks" rank these according to level of interest for me? That way, if there's no interest in something, I can throw it off the list and never worry about it again.
Wildfire: If you bring your collection of DMC floss, I'll bring mine. grin. We can all have bracelets out the ass.
Lin: Cool. There's a bunch of stuff I only vaguely remember anymore anyway, so I'll definitely put you on teaching whatever things I can.
Um... more later, but that's a nice prelim, I think. Cool!

Coolness.
Bracelets - Yeah, I'll get some copies of the handout I have and we'll have fun
Beading - I can make flowers on single strand monofilament with seed beads...
Sculpty - Oven drying clay, way cool, and cheap too
Tissue flowers - Someone be on the lookout for little yellow paper stamens, they used to sell them with the cake decorating supllies, and I can do cherry blossom branches. Otherwise, you get carnations
Origami - I'll have the good ones from my origami a day calander plus a few I know, and a good bit of actually origami paper
Other stuff if there is interest:
Glass etching: I have the stuff, its not hard
Cel paiinting: Doesn't make much sense outside of anime or other cartoonish stuff, but I can bring the stuff if there's interest

Eva:: You used to have a lanyard (top link). The kind that Thorn is talking about is the bottom two.

Dude! I still have that thing! Philips Silicon Valley Center, mine says. Not so attractive though.
In that case: I vote 'nay'. Knitting and related activities bring back childhood trauma.

ok - you know those rucksacks and handbags that goth girls seem to carry around a lot - they always seem to have those mirrors and stuff sewn to the front, voila! Batik.
Its obviously a bit more complicated that that...right?!...but anyway thats the bare bones of it. I think.
*waits for someone to tell her that she is on glue and completely wrong

No, you're right - though I'm thinking less goth, more brightly colored ethnic-y.
It's something that would have gone best with tie-dying, which appears to be dying a slow voter-induced death. Which is okay.
Basically, you take a piece of white cloth and a "pen" that "writes" in paraffin wax. You need to have your design pretty much in mind already when you start, because any part of that cloth you want to remain white, you "paint" in wax. Then you throw it into the lightest color dye you want to use (say, yellow). Then, once the fabric is dry again, you "paint" the parts you want to remain yellow. Once the wax is cooled, you throw it into the next-darkest color you plan to use and continue on until your design is complete.
It's been ages since I did batiking as well, but it's so darn cool, I just had to see if there was interest in it.
