I.
I cupped you in the palm of my hand,
untracably soft, sharp, carefree
corners, throbbing and
red as birth,
your mouth curled
and your eyes opened.
I'd place the lips
of you around me,
like a blanket, a cave,
and hide until
all the grown-ups
stopped looking and
retired to their martinis,
but you scolded me for
getting off-topic
and I remembered that
you were waiting for me,
innocently dressed in white,
at the end of the dock,
waving until you disappeared
out of sight, around the edge,
but you came back and
smiled at me, cupping my
face and I rocked you
until you fell asleep.
II.
I feigned sleep
whenever you shifted
your thighs,
and I moved the pillow
back underneath your head
whenever it slipped
and I held your cheeks,
pressed you to me,
when your demons flew
at your breasts,
you don't forget my skin,
the stretches and stretches
you helped me to love
and memorize the way you
looked beside above beneath
me, your skin perspiring
and the truthfulness of your eyes
smooth and wavered,
my hand cups
and your back exhales
gently unarching unclenching
I kiss you.
III.
Your mother didn't like
how I smiled at her and her
neck, puffed and solid as a man's,
dripped back when I went in
to kiss her hand like a
gentleman, kindly pushing
aside moral conventions
and particles of blasphemy,
I love her and my fingers
slip,
"subtle," she says.
I repeat it, feel the word
like a cold stone curl
around my tongue,
press to the roof
of my mouth and my arms
shiver.
The lights on the inside
fade and you look towards me,
slipping your hand between
my thighs and you look at me
so solemn, I forget to watch
the road and she disappears
along the trace, slipping
into backgrounds and backgrounds,
bookends left open, dust
collecting between ripped spines,
authors' names littering the pavement,
glittering flowing perfect names,
without their works, unmoved,
cataclysmic pieces, in the dry spell
of humid summers and wasted
dreams, you kissed me
until my eyes flowered, blossomed
into vacuums and your smell
deserted me.
