Annyone know of any tourist friendly US cities that are good for short breaks- three to four days or so- with some good stuff to do? Looking round for some possible holiday ideas and figured I'd throw the question out to ya'll. Also why you think it's a good place to go- things to do/attractions etc.- would also help. Oh and New York is out 'cause I've already done that before. Thanks.

Well for going by yourself it depends on what you like.

The U.S. does not lack for places to go. If you are looking for fun in the sun, go down to like Florida, Miami Beach, Ft Lauderdale, etc. Also I hear that The Gulf side of Texas (Corpse Christi, etc.) are pretty hoppin as well.

Puerto Rico rocks.

For more subdued, California is nice place to visit with a range of things to see and do.

For outdoorsy things, Colorado is very nice in the summer.

Seattle I heard is a nice place to visit though I cannot say from personal experience.

The east coast has some kick ass colonial achitecture and nifty little things to chek out, but that would probably involve a longer trip.

i almost forgot, Vegas can be fun, but usually with a group of friends.

And you are always welcome in Chicago.

I can only comment on where I've been but San-Fran, Chicago, Miami and Washington are all great.

Out of theose I'd possibly say San-Fran or Chicago. Both are GREAT cities.

But as IC says it depends on what you want to do while you're there.

I'd suggest Ft. Lauderdale (I LOVED it there *dreamy sigh*) or some other place in Florida.

I would suggest Vegas, but since I've never been there *spears Daki with the Evil Eye*, I can't say for sure that you'd enjoy it. let alone by yourself.

Texas is okay if you don't mind sweltering heat due to ungodly amounts of humidity or that the beaches are blistering hot starting in June. oh, did I mention the freakish amounts of brown prickly kelp and jellyfish that enjoy those waters? eh... actually... I'd stay far away from any beaches or party islands in Texas/around Texas as soon as summer vacation starts. you'd be lucky if you can even see the beach or the strip from a helicopter. not to mention the hurricane season starts in August... BUT, Texas has plenty of strip joints!

....and ... I guess Chi-town isn't so bad. I guess.

Memphis sucks. Don't come here.

Las Vegas is great if you are a good gambler/card player and enjoy sleeping a total of 10 hours in 4 days.

I suggest Indianapolis on July 24th to the 29th.

San Diego is good. Grand Rapids Michigan is good. Chicago is cool. Atlanta, Memphis, many more. i agree it depends on what you do, and want to do.

Yep. I'd have to agree that Grand Rapids, Michigan is a good place for tourism. There is plenty to see. I never get tired going there

Heh...hmm...DC is a ton of fun, between a billion places to go and the metro system that can get you mostly anywhere you want from Baltimore to Crystal City, Arlington Nat'l cemetary, Smithsonian, Air and Space Musuem (which rocks), a ton of things just inside DC, up to Baltimore Inner Harbor for some nice exepnsive shops and restaurants, the boardwalk area, some fun things to do down in Falls Church VA area.

Corpus Christi TX is a great place for vacation, usually not too hot, beach that's fairly empty outside of spring break, can't remember anything of note besdies the Navy base we lived in but you obviously can't visit that

Um...Wilmington NC has very nice beaches and you can walk around and try to insert youself as an extra while they're filming movies and Dawson's Creek and such

Atlanta's eh, lots to do, but not much outside of a few free concerts and the Olympic park to really see scenery wise, time it right and you could hit Dragon Con though.

Indy actually has quite a few nice things to do besides Gencon if you wanted to go, but Chicago does have more by far, natural history musem and the science musuem are fun as well as Chinatown and lakeshore walking or whatever.

And we get conventions here too! Like Wizard World in July or the Anime convention that is being held this month.

Well yeah, Anime cons, AWA in Atlanta in Sept, ACen in Chicago in a week or two, Otakon in Baltimore in late July, Anime Expo out west coast, Big Apple Anime, Anime Boston, etc

Atlanta is cool. Memphis sucks. Don't come here, unless you have some otherworldly urge to see Elvis's House of Bad Taste or want some damn good barbeque - and I can FedEx you the barbeque.

I'd also recommend Chicago. I grew up in the suburbs, I visit there several times a year, and I never stop seeing new stuff. And you do have a lot of acquaintances in the area.... grin. Oh, and Madison's good for a day or two, IMO.

For the record, if you do decide to visit Madison, you're welcome to stay at our place, even if we can't take time off work to hang with you or whatever. (And heck, maybe you prefer solitary travel anyway, I've no idea.) Bus system is good, though - you don't have to depend on a car to get places. Chicago is good for that too.

Course I am one of those wierd people who prefer nature over industry.

I have a hard time recommending cities, because I like them for who lives there. Inhabitants aside, I would suggest San Francisco and area, Madison, WI, and Austin, TX. Also, Winnipeg looked like a nice place in Canada, but I only drove through it.

Actually, Chicago is looking pretty good. Local airport has good direct flights, looks like a good place to get lost for three/four days or so and Moo has generously- or should that be foolishly? - offered a bed for a few days as well.

Go to Chicago, and stay with Moo. I was just up to Chicago this past weekend for my anniversary, and we didn't lack for anything to do. My wife and I went to the Shedd Aquarium and the Botanical Gardens in Evanston. It was a good time, except for the damned Lake Shore Drive construction. I had to break out the old offensive driving skills again.

And you will have a good time with Moo. That I am sure off.

Oh, quick Chicago tip: Places like the Shedd Aquarium (a personal favorite) and the Planetarium are usually free certain days of the week. I think Mondays for most of them, but it's a good thing to check into. Though you usually still have to pay to get into the special exhibits and such. Still though - cheaper is cheaper.

Speaking of aquariums, if you're in Cali at any point, go see the Monterey Bay aquarium. Oh my god, so cool. I could stand and stare at their deep water exhibit for days.

We didn't even get to go through all of it. There's so much to do there...

As many Bulldrekkers can tell you, Madison doesn't suck...

It's probably not worth a whole week, but Milwaukee is pretty cool and Chicago is only a couple of hours away.

There are plenty to do in Madison. It's tourist-friendly town. Be sure to visit State Street

Already had a, brief, look round the place. Seemed like a nice place. Also had one of the smallest game shops I've seen.

hee hee. That would the the World's Smallest Gaming Store. Don't worry, nobody actually goes there for gaming stuff. We all go to Pegasus or Dragon's Lair instead.

Yep. Pegasus Games is one of many reasons why I go to Wisconsin There's always good games there to explore through. Both board and RPG.
