Ok, so here's a cray idea. Orcs are plants. The greenskinned, somewhat apeish monsters we all know and love? They're actually the ambulatory seed stage of an intelligent race of trees. The tree, the adult, drops seedlings that ripen and get up and roam around. They're carnivorous, though they can also gain substantial sustenance from photo synthesis.
All mobile Orcs are male, with the tree's being female. The Metamorphosis between the two sexes occurs in later life, as the Ork's skin begins to take on a thick, bark like consistency. Eventually this completely hardens, and the Orc will take root, usually after digging a deep hole to bury itself in. Then it begins it's life as a female orc, a tree.
As a tree, the Orc still retains intelligence, in fact becoming increasingly more intelligent and capable of critical thought. They communicate to male orcs through complex pheromone languages, and are the center of Orc culture.
