Seattle 2064: Locations Needed

Post by Adam »

Hey folks,

I'm finally working through Seattle 2064 [formerly Seattle 2063, but hey, time moves!], and I've compiled an index of the locations, the district they're in, and what type of location they are. The major thing I've noticed is that most of the districts have only a handful of locations, as opposed to Downtown which has over 50 named locations.

I don't want every district to have 50 locations, but I would like to plump them out to about a dozen or so each, so I'm looking for a few more submissions from you guys for this. I'll be posting this request over at Underworld93, as well.

I realize it sounds kind of crazy to be asking for more stuff when the damned thing has been delayed for so long, but after such delays I desperately want it to be worth the wait.

As opposed to the free-form submissions during the original creation of this book, there are a few guidelines to follow to help speed the process.

1. No more Downtown locations, locations backed by the Mafia or Yakuza, or brothels/massage parlours.

2. Don't write the main text as if it was taken from an advertisement for the store or service. Also, not every place needs some sort of dark secret, underworld connection, or even shadowtalk at all - some places in the Sixth World are, believe it or not, normal.

3. Don't include redundant data in the header - if a restuarant has no bias, for example, don't say "no bias", just leave that out. "Bias Towards" means "This location likes these people", "Bias Against" means "This location dislikes these people."

4. No entry should be longer than 400 words, including shadowtext.

5. The header format should look like this:

THE BARRICADE
Large Bar and Grill | Mile marker 65 Interstate 5 | Zoie Thayer, Owner and Operator | Bias against non-cops | LTG NA/UCAS-SEA-209-445-7681

Districts we need locations for:

Auburn: Nine entries.
Bellevue: Six entries.
Council Island: Five entries.
Everett: Nine entries.
Fort Lewis: Six entries. No military-themed entries.
Puyallup: Six entries

Locations that we need:

Please pay attention to what other people post; we don't need a half-dozen of any of the listed location types. Obviously, some of the new locations will be restaurants, bars, etc.

A couple coffin motels.
Some scummy gutterpunk bars.
Medium and high-class hotels
A couple cemetaries
A funeral home
A convention center
Legit medical facilities
Private Schools

I didn't see this mentioned in your post Adam-Time limit for posters?

I will be, of course, working on some more locations for each district!

To facilitate sharing this thread is also echoed at Underworld.

>Downtown Playa

>Besides rodeos and art shows, they also host a number of corporate shindigs. Nothing like what happens Downtown-but a lot of AA and A corporations have events through out the year at the Meydenbauer.

Auburn: The White River Military Academy

Post by Serious Paul »

The White River Military Academy
1 White River Drive | Commandant Raymond “Red” Dominquez | Subtle Bias against Metahumans

This privately owned Military Academy is nestled along the rolling hills on the White River. Providing a training curriculum that meets both UCAS National Educational Standards and the UCAS/CAS ROTC requirements the White River Military Academy accepts young men from the ages of 9, and upward. Students graduate with both a firm grounding in Academia but a solid understanding of the basic principles that guide a professional soldier in life.

Commandant Dominquez, a highly decorated former CAS Naval officer is the headmaster of the school.

>Dominquez was “retired” after very vocally advocating the Humanis Policlub. The school’s staff is all former professional military men (Mostly former officers, and Staff NCO’s) but if you do some checking they’ve all had some involvement with Humanis or similar organizations. Metahumans average nearly twice as many training accidents as human children do.
>Your Mother

>That’s nonsense. The school staff is hard, and they expect the boys to train equally hard. I don’t know where you get your information from but you’re wrong chummer.

Jake's U-Store-It
(Puyallup, somebody give me an address) | Johan "Jake" Vedersen | Moderate bias against law enforcement

A bit of an anomoly in a time when vertical space is the way to go, Jake's U-Store-It is 374,000 square feet of 11 one story, rundown, flat roofed buildings divided into little 5x5, 10x10 and 20x20 bare rooms. Some have a lightbulb, most have roll doors. Late twenieth century people had more drek than they could fit in their houses and loved to pay other poeple te store it in these little rooms. People just don't do that as much these days. Cheap perimeter gate and cheaper locks, Jake, whose english is barely understandable, rents by the day, the week, or the month, cash only. No one really understands why it hasn't become a parking garage yet, but no one really cares either.

> Hey I care! That's our studio!
> Screaming Mimi
"Noise! Live tonight!"

>'Self Storage' they called it, too true, you know half those rooms are someones hidey hole. I mean whose gonna bring back trouble when the rest of the place will lynch you if you make the Star come take a looksee?
> Snow

>Living in a 5x5 shed? I've done worse...
>Turnpike

Kai wrote:A bit of an anomoly in a time when vertical space is the way to go, Jake's U-Store-It is exactly what it sounds like, a turn of the century style self storage lot.
Not to pick on you, Kai, but you did something very easy to do - you used a modern day reference as if everyone in 2065 would understand it. I understand that it's easier to write that way because all of your *real* readers know what a modern U-Store-It looks like. The chances of the average reader in 2065 knowing, however, is substantially less. So, it shoudl probably be explained - even though it's redundant to us - that a turn of the century lot is typically only a few stories high yet takes up a lot of square footage.

Something else that I'll go back and put in the original post: Not every place needs a dark secret or underworld hook. Really, it's OK for real businesses run by ordinary people to exist. :-)

Riva Nova
Bar/Lounge | (Everett, make something up) | Serana

Riva Nova is often classified as a 'goth club' by the ignorant and its patrons aren't really inclined to correct them. Regulars know that the most important rule is that everyone respect each others space and more importantly quiet. Music is live but is soft or muted, and the atmosphere lends itself to a slightly older and experienced crowd who aren't interested in impressing anyone, only out to relax. The place is perpetually dark or shaded and candle lit, often incense or aromatic oils are used as well. Serana, who has never given a last name nor volunteered any information about herself, runs the place with an even hand.

>That's one cool lady there, she is. Well-mannered, soft-spoken, can make you do whatever you want with a few choice words and an egmatic smile. You ever see those flatvids about courtseans in old europe? Yeah, only with less silly clothing.
>Raj

>Better than that bouncer of hers. She scares me. Little jap girl with a painted face. Never says a word but you start anything and she'll break your arms before you know you went too far.
>Curious Greg

>All you runners out there, its a good time. Just remember its a real honest working stiffs place, not fancy, not a dive, just comfortably unnoticed. It isn't a biz joint. You ask for info, not demand, offering cred will get you offended looks, and nine times out of ten you won't see another runner in there. Think nice, regular joe or jane ya know, and you'll learn to like it.

Redmond: The Tower

Post by Serious Paul »

The Tower
15750 Redmond Way |Carl Weaver, Manager| LTG: NA/UCAS-SEA 11206-556-1390

This fully automated transit hotel is located just off the railroad tracks and a few blocks from I520. Completely automated most services are available for a basic fee.

>As Coffin Hotels go this one isn’t much more notable than any other. If it weren’t so close to both the tracks and the highway, no one would probably remember this place. Just down the street is a Chinese take out joint called “Chins."

I'll be sure to double-check any of the stuff that's credited to you - I'm going over the entire manuscript again, anyway.

As a reminder, all of the text in Seattle 2064 is written in-character, although the tone of voice for the body of the entries should be relatively neutral.

Lawson's Pit
Small Gymnasium | 325B Thiele Way, Puyallup | Nimoy Lawson, Proprieter | Bias against law enforcement | No LTG Acess

Lawson's is home to "the cleanest Pit Fighting in the Sprawl", or so claims thier less than hush-hush advertising. Gutterpunks trying to prove themselves, madmen with a passion for bare-handed violence, and squatters in desperate need of a few nuyen line up here every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night for a no-magic/no-cyber/no-weapons fight for the evening's purse.

>Lawson is a real stickler about keeping his fights clean. Generally, there's a couple powerful spirits on hand to handle rule-breakers, not to mention to the heavily wired bouncers that man the doors.
>Poison Ivy

>Lately a lot of corporate execs out for a night of 'slumming' have been sneaking into the fights, which can make a nice extraction point if you have some corporate questions that need answered.
>Xavier

>Don't let Lawson feed you his line about the Pit being a former Heavyweight Boxing trainer's gym--the reality is that it used to be a roller-rink.

Goofy Question

Post by Cazmonster »

I like the idea of doing the Convention Center, but I've got a couple of questions.

Does anybody have a brand name for a major food/beverage company in the Shadowrun world? I'd love to do a 2063-version of "Coca-Cola Presents the Seahawks Stadium".

After that, can we use 'current' brand labels, like Coke, ConAgra Foods or RJR/Nabisco in the game setting?

But Flak, that would mean getting either Spider Jerusalem, or far worse, Alan Moore pissed off at me. While I'm fairly certain, I can take Spider, Alan scares the hell out of me.

I'd encourage you not to do this unless the brand has already been used in Shadowrun - for example, Microsoft became Microdeck. Continuing with this example, if you used Microsoft in an example without realizing it was Microdeck, gates [hah! I slay me!] to some parallel dimension would open as the two identical corps with different names battle for supremacy.

So, to summarize: only use a brand name if it's already in use in SR, or if you made it up, but not if it's a RL brand name that hasn't been used in SR canon.

That would be a great list to have - all the corporate branding in the Shadowrun world.

In any case, I think I might go with SLOPPY SOY and have them as a sponsor.

The Biltmore Royal Resort
Luxury Hotel | (a large chunk of space in Bellevue) | Alexis Xaiver, General manager

With the fracturing of US, the Biltmore corporation found itself with hotels in all the major players except for the Seattle Metroplex. No ones really quite sure how or when they acquired the land in Bellevue and got it rezoned, but many suspect a very old money/old boys under the table deal. Nevertheless construction started on the Biltmore Royal Resort in 2045 and one of the most opulant hotels in the world opened in May of 2051.

The BRR caters to the richest of the rich, the absolute extreme of society. Their dining boasts 10 5 star chefs in 4 restaurants using bone china, Swarovski crystal glasses and real silverware, and their list of amenities includes a full service outpatient cosmetic body shop offering such services as leonization treatments and full body sculpting. In house tailors carry a wide array of the latest tres chic fashions as well as materials for one of a kind originals at the behest of guests.

A favorite amongst visiting VIPs the latest announcement out of the Resort is the pending acquisition of land and approval from the Draco Foundation to build a 'guest suite' suitable for a dragon, named in Dunkelzahn's honor.

>Holy drek. That's all I have to say. I got in there once, once! as a temporary attache to a Johnson and got damn near body cavity searched. My friend on the astral side had to present so many certs and material samples I thought we'd be standing at the door for hours. You could make a modest fortune off selling a couple dozen doorknobs.
>Reese

>Doorknobs?
>Misha

>The place is done up in rich tweneith century. All the modern stuff, but hidden so well its almost impossible to figure out where the maglock sensors are in the wood panneling and the cameras in the vaulted ceilings. I mean guests get old cut metal keys for their rooms, and there's a lock, but its really a maglock reading the chip embeded in the key. The attention to detail is incredible if making figuring out your overwatch damn near impossible.

Serenity of Buddha Clinic

Small Medical Clinic | 1818 Overlake Dr E, Bellevue | Dr. Raghuveer Harshad, Senior Partner | No Bias | LTG NA/UCAS-SEA-206-729-2266

The Serenity of Buddha provides economical medical services to any person, so long as they have proper SIN and identification. Dr. Harshad and his dedicated staff keep the Clinic open on a 24 hour basis. While they will not perform cyber or bio implant surgery, they do provide holisitic and traditional medical care. This does include regluar maintenance on cybernetic and bioengineered parts.

The clinic has taken advantage of 'coffin' hotel technology as well, and has twelve recuperation beds in the same space as four in a normal clinic. The staff of four doctors and a dozen or so nurses quite often have their hands full with the large population of folks in need.

> Doc Harshad will do you right, he's even got a good policy on slow payments. "Pay what you can. While life is suffering, you need not suffer pain and paucity at once," he says.
> Xiao Green

> The Doc and his partners will do you right, even if it takes longer than at other clinics. I guess his budget doesn't let him afford the SOTA gear like at DocWagon. So long as you don't mind squatting with crying brats, or old folks, you can't go wrong.
> Atom's Apple

> One note of warning chummers, get yourselves clean and legal before you go there. The staff are quick with the calls to Lone Star for any infractions. And take it from me, flashing hardware will get you dumped on your ass.

How about 142nd Ave and 128th Street E ? That puts it a block or two from the Puyallup prison and might go well with the bias against law enforcement. Plus it looks to be an old train yard, which is a good place for a sprawling complex to go as the area decays.
Late twentieth century people had more drek than they could fit in their houses and loved to pay other people to store it in these little rooms. People just don't do that as much these days.
I disagree with only these statements. I consider all the text of Shadowrun to indicate society has moved even more towards this trend of consumerism and fads. With smaller living spaces and perpetual displacement, I can only see the need growing. Even the trend of coffin hotels supports the idea behind continued use of storage units. What makes Jake's unique is that it is neither automated nor built in a towering complex, but self storage should be a well understood concept for a 2060 audience.

I agree, except I see it as a trend that gravitates towards disposable goods, designed with planned obsolescence as an integral part of not only the design process, but the buying/consuming process.

In 206x you not only know that the NERP you are buying isn't going to last more than six months, but you plan on that. Cheap disposable goods that could easily (for the most part) be recycled.
With smaller living spaces and perpetual displacement, I can only see the need growing.
But not the concept of less stuff? (Whatever its called?) With so much mor eof your life in 206x available on the Matrix, and through wireless transactions, or through multitasked items (Pocket secratary/ cred reader/ Chip playback unit/many other items in a single hand held device that eliminates the need for a number of other devices working in tandem.) I see a movement away from material goods, since in 206x less is almost certainly more.

However I think the further up the income bracket you get, the less true this would have to be. As your income increases you can afford to devote more income to things like space, and luxury goods, rather than subsistance.

Just my opinion.

I agree that corporations will be building disposable products, but I think people are not like that. We don't plan on the obsolescence unless we are of the intelligence (and probably income level) to not fall into the trap of trends and fads. We constantly put off routine vehicle maintenance, even when the machines are begging for it until “we can afford it.” It is much easier to rationalize 20 or even 30 dollars a month than 300 a year when the bill is due.

Not only that, but people grow attached to their things even after they have become junk. Storage units today are littered with broken TVs and toasters, faded jeans and ripped posters. Students go to collage with little and return home with more than the space can hold; all of these things end in storage places. The Jackrabbit they don’t need while living in Seattle and riding the Monorail can’t fit in Mommy’s garage anymore; it too ends in storage, as she’ll need it in a month or two. The drones and parts of the rigger hobbyist, the baby cloths and crib for generation next (there’s a recycling tip), the things we keep in our attic have no space except in storage.
In 206x you not only know that the NERP you are buying isn't going to last more than six months, but you plan on that. Cheap disposable goods that could easily (for the most part) be recycled.
What do you have in your closet? Anything you can claim you need beyond the cloths, coats and hats? I might agree the self-storage craze is past the golden age, but so are colloseums, stadiums and raves. People will still need them, even if many have be co-opted by the coffin craze.
But not the concept of less stuff? (Whatever its called?)
Minimalism? And I can see that being another fad, played out with multitudes of followers out protesting Imperialist waste.
With so much more of your life in 206x available on the Matrix, and through wireless transactions, or through multitasked items (Pocket secretary/ cred reader/ Chip playback unit/many other items in a single hand held device that eliminates the need for a number of other devices working in tandem.) I see a movement away from material goods, since in 206x less is almost certainly more.
Magical trinkets, bottles and creams plus aromatherapy; plastic plants that help us breath along with masks that prevent disease? People invent new things to need, though more and more on the Matrix, I’ll agree. But the higher up on the income scale the more you are to have digital things; it is the poor that by satellite TVs and Gucci bags to stay on top - not to mention drugs and whatnot.
However I think the further up the income bracket you get, the less true this would have to be. As your income increases you can afford to devote more income to things like space, and luxury goods, rather than subsistence.
The rich conserve and save, though their items are often larger like yachts and things, those are more investments to be sold again. I’ll say I think you've swayed me towards self-storage being not as hot as it is today, but still around and a category in the YellowPage.

And hi.

In the version of shadowrun in my head, the only people who need this sort of thing don't have the money for a ton of disposable goods. I see the trends going to smaller spaces, smaller things, convenience stuff, living spaces engineered and designed by experts to maximize space and effeciency because cramming more houses/apartments per square foot costs the corp less. Think cell phones, a lot of people who used to have 2 or 3 house phones now have one small cell phone, and apply that to most everything you own.

The whole corporate controlled lifestyle just doesn't promote excess really to me, and everything not corporate isn't going to be a huge market, hence why its a rundown, not well maintained thing.

Just FYI, drowned in freelance work right now. May or may not have time to form any sort of coherent response before Saturday, which is really when I fall out of touch pre-gencon.

Paul [or someone else], could you count the locations that have been submitted so far here and at Underworld93 and post a tally of what's still needed, that would rock.

For me, everything about corporations is excess, consumerism, imperialism, and exploitation; more is better; greed is good. Convincing people to pay every month to store the goods they bought last month so they have room for this month's hot ticket is brilliant corporate ideology at work. It's like having a garbage dump that continues to charge "rent" on the junk for years to come.

The reason Jake’s is rundown could easily stem from poor management, just like many storage places of today.

Okay thanks first to Kanada Ten for helping me compile this list. I owe you big.

Auburn: 9 locales.
Bellevue: 11 locales
Council Island: 3 locales (We're hurting here.)
Downtown: 53 locales
Everett: 5 locales
Fort Lewis: 11 locales
Puyallup: 9 locales
Redmond: 8 locales

Snohomish: Tenative 0!
Tacoma: 5 locales :(

We have 3 locales pending some pretty heavy editing for Renton (Andvare/n00b thats your stuff, I want to post it! Get it in the format guy!)

Okay based off of Adams original list we still need some of the following:

One or two more coffin hotels
A couple coffin motels.
A couple cemeteries
A funeral home-we have one, and maybe a possible

But don't let that limit you, if you have a good idea post it.

A reminder! In order for your entry to be considered for submission IT MUST BE formatted! That means following the submission guidelines! Please and thank you!

Sure.

From the Seattle Sourcebook Page 59:
Visitors to Council Island sometimes feel they have been cast back into a distant time when man lived in harmony with nature. The island's buildings are constructed from rough hewn logs, the government officials wear handwoven garments, and the trees are everywhere. This feeling of escape to a simpler time usually lasts until you run into a bureaucrat carrying a portable computer or notice the solar collectors on the roofs of log buildings or hear the sounds of downtown Seattle only minutes away.

Even before the Awakening the large island in the middle of Lake Washington was a beautiful place. It was called Mercer Island then, and the city's wealthy liked to build their palatial homes on the island's evergreen-covered hills. When the Treaty of Denver ceded Mercer Lake to the Salish-Shidhe Council for use as their embassy in Seattle, they renamed the island and embarked on an ambitous project to transfrom it.

Most of the modern buildings and roads were torn down, with Salish and Shidhe buildings erected in the place of luxurious homes.

That help?

Janazh’s
Large Cemetery and Mosque | 13033 SE 69th Way | Asaad al-Nasseri, Manager | Bias against non Muslims | LTG: NA/UCAS-SEA 16206-227-4554

Sitting just north of Lake Boren in Renton this spacious facility caters to Seattle’s slowly growing Muslim community. Two small Mosques and a graveyard that makes use of modern space saving techniques while still respecting the tenets of the Islamic faith make this facility a rapidly popular place for Seattle’s slowly growing Muslim community to pay their respects.

>Muslims around the world bury the dead as quickly as possible, preferably before sundown on the day of death. Cremation is not practiced in Islam. The corpse is cleaned by a person of the same sex as the deceased and is given a ritual ablution (washing)... The body typically is shrouded in a winding cloth. However, martyrs (people who die for a holy cause) are buried as they died, in their clothes, unwashed, for their wounds bear testimony to their martyrdom. A funeral prayer is performed for the recently dead by the mourners and by anyone present in the mosque at the time.
>Alien Tourist
“From way out of Town”

>Used to be that mourners carried the corpse through the streets to a Mosque for prayers, or to its final destination-but Shedim, and plain old random street crime has made this a pretty dangerous practice-they use vehicle processions now a days. However martyrs and Muslim VIP’s still get the full treatment.
>Zeus

>Muslim bodies are buried facing towards Mecca on their right side. It’s also not uncommon for there to be several days of grieving by the family and friends.
