No infant should have eye cancer...

Post by sinsual »

Those who have caught it on FB already know, but the last 6 months, my wife, daughter and I have been dealing with a serious issue.

At 4 months old, my little Granddaughter Evie, was diagnosed with Bilateral Retinoblastoma, or RB for short. A Genetic Cancer that first manifests in the eyes.

We were lucky, usually it does not get caught until 1-2 years of age. So for the last 6 months, Evie has been getting monthly treatments from Phoenix Children's Hospital of Chemo, with Monthly trips to Children's Los Angeles for Exams under Anesthesia to monitor the cancerous growth.

The initial diagnosis spotted the tumor in her right eye which measured 19.5mm Tall by 9mm wide...Pretty much the entire center section of her retina. The also later found smaller tumors in her left eye, which is when we learned she had the Bi-Lateral form of the cancer which carries very serious long term risks such as increased susceptibility to other cancers.

The Chemo has arrested the cancer in her left eye for now, and though it has stopped the growth of the cancer in her right eye...the core is still active and angry.

6 months ago, there was a 90% chance she would have to have her right eye removed, but we held off having it done since she had to have the Chemo for her left eye...As of Wednesday, her last exam, they are giving us a 50/50 chance she may keep her right eye. In a month, we will know what plan of action the specialist treatment team at CHLA suggests. There are other treatments, but we are going to have to weigh them heavily, as each treatment can cause Quality of Life issues down the road just to please ourselves now.

If you're curious, my sig contains her website which has more info about RB.

Thoughts, prayers, rituals, hell I can even offer up a few people for Sacrifice if that is your gig would be very welcome.

Very saddened to hear about this. My wife and I will keep Evie and the rest of your family in our thoughts.

I suspect that people who speak or write properly are up to no good, or homersexual, or both

BTW, Evie has become one of the Poster Children for Daisy's Eye Cancer Fund, both US and Internationally. The Below picture shows you what the cancer looks like with an iPhone 4 and flash...
I think you can figure out which pupil the tumor is in...

Oh, and Uncle Joseph, if you do anything with, or know any of the pilots who volunteer with Angel Flights, tell them thank you for me. I can not express how much of a Life Saver they were for those first few months when travel was so difficult for us with Evie. They turned a 6-8 hour drive with a chemo sick infant into a smooth 2-3 hour flight.

I bump into some of those pilots every now and again...I will certainly thank them for you when I see them.
