What's the Oldest Thing In Your Home?

Post by FlakJacket »

Random curiosity, but what's the oldest thing that the posters around here own? The house/flat itself no counting if you're a home owner.

I don't own it, but it's in the house. A foot-powered sewing machine from some point in the 1920's. Don't know an exact year.

Oldest thing I own? A stuffed rabbit I had as a kid that's stored on one of my shelves. 26 years old.

Unless I am mistaken I own nothing of any significant age, nor will I ever if it can be helped. I don't like collecting lots of stuff.

Oldest thing I own is my grandmother's awesome little handbag from the general area of 1952. She "loaned" it to me for West Side Story (2005), then realized that I adored it, and told me to keep it. Other than that, we've got a painting circa 1890's, and some jewelry from the same time period.
My personal favorites:
*A handmade dollhouse (dad's dad), ~20 years old
*A handmade rocking dog (also dad's dad), ~20 years old
*A wood-framed glass case containing a gorgeous porcealin doll, purchased by my mother's mother. The case was made by my mother's father. Whole shebang ~15 years old.
Not the oldest, but the niftiest, at least in my book.

Don't you own a copy of SR 1? That's 20 years or so, isn't it? So hah! You've got old stuff! YOU'RE OLD! FACE IT! :lol

I will have to look, but I think my ex ended up with my cookbook printed back in the early 1800's(1816/1818) otherwise, it will have to be the painting of my wife's great Aunt Malsey done around the late 1700's early 1800's.

The oldest thing I own would be probably jeans shorts which I got ca 10 years ago, haven't worn much and still can fit.

I have a Roman coin from, I don't know, second century or something? It's barely legible, and not worth anything, but I appreciate its antiquity.

I feel like there's something older, but I have an antique cookie jar that's been passed from mother to daughter for four generations.

Two-hundred year-old family bible (not our family's). Unless some of this stuff is older than it looks.

My wife.

I don't have any antiques or anything, so I think it might be the original printing of Stephen King's "The Long Walk" (published under the Richard Bachman name)-- maybe I have some comics that are older, but I can't think of any of note.

I would probably have to say the oldest thing in my house is a stoneware plate setting. My parents gave it to me when I moved the last time...they got it for their wedding, 30 years ago. So it's roughly 30 years old. Maybe some pictures, but I'm not sure of them.

Yeah, see, I was going to do that. But I didn't want various body parts handed to me if she happened to read it.

The oldest thing that I personally own would be my first sax - a Buscher tenor made in the mid- to late-twenties. Gorgeous instrument.

Reading Sal's post while slightly bleary-eyed leads to some funny ideas of him keeping his first girlfriend locked up in a glass case.

Then, no, it's not the oldest thing in your home. Grampa-in-law.

If you were married, I don't see why not. Maybe it's considered "step-grampa," though.

I think the oldest thing in my house is the my house itself, which was built in 1906.

I actually have a Buscher C-Melody as well, which I completely forgot about until, like, right now. That one needs to be repadded but is otherwise in much better condition.

For me it has to be the Japanese silk rank badge that clocks in at about 250 years old.

A book on animal husbandry that belonged to my great-grandfather, printed in 1868.
Geneticists have established that all women share a common ancestor, called Eve, and that all men share a common ancestor, dubbed Adam. However, it has also been established that Adam was born 80.000 years after Eve. So, the world before him was one of heavy to industral strength lesbianism, one assumes.

Limiting myself just to what I own personally, I think it'd be a pair of Crimean war cavalry sabers. There's a lot of really odd shit around my house though so I could have forgotten something.
