I just bought one today. Totally stoked. I'm a first-time homeowner, so this will be quite the experience.
It's suburban, just outside the city of St. Joe - short drive from the beaches of Lake Michigan. It's a 2-story stone* house with a roomy 2 car garage. Many of the rooms in the home have tongue-and-groove knotty pine walls - giving it the feel of a cabin. Big bay windows in the kitchen and living room. Bathroom is new - ooh, and its got this pimp-ass Whirlpool Gold Series refrigerator. Not that I need one, but its cool.
Downstairs in the rec room - huge room, full length of the house, also w/ the beautiful wooden walls - complete with a big-ass fireplace, wet bar, and plenty of room for the pool table I hope to acquire in the somewhat-near future. Big laundry room and lots of storage space. Very pretty yard, lots of blooming flower trees and bushes, and flowers. Big wooden deck, good for grilling out. Spacious, but not stupidly big, fenced in back yard. Behind the fence is a soccer field so I can watch the kids play during the summer.
I'm dancing. You can't see me, but I'm dancing.
Housewarming party is estimated around the end of June/early July. Any area folks are more than welcome to join in the festivities. Wooooohoooooo.
Any random advice on things to know? I've already ordered the home inspection and supposedly there's lots of tax breaks for new home owners, but I don't know much other stuff.
I could bake pies and take them to my neighbors!! ...Oh wait. They're supposed to do that for me, isn't it? That's retarded. I want to make them pies.
Anyways - just elated and wanted to share my news.
*stone=pimp, yo.

To the entire world, you may be one single person, but to one person, you may be the entire world.

Unrelated: I totally just realized that I'm your sig now. I'm always happy when my humiliation can serve a good cause.Jestyr wrote:Are two-storey houses that big a deal in the US, or in those parts of the US?
Mine's two-storey, kinda, but that's not exactly out of the ordinary around here

Screw liquid diamond. I want to be able to fling apartment building sized ingots of extracted metal into space.
Congratulations, Teja, on acquiring a house. And one you're evidently very happy about! I shall drink a beer to celebrate on your behalf.
Geneticists have established that all women share a common ancestor, called Eve, and that all men share a common ancestor, dubbed Adam. However, it has also been established that Adam was born 80.000 years after Eve. So, the world before him was one of heavy to industral strength lesbianism, one assumes.

I was thinking the same thing.
My un-wanted advice: If you remodel the kitchen look at the way the professional chef's have their kitchen's laid out. What appliances where, how are the pots/pans/knifes/utinsiles stored, what materials are used for the countertop surfaces (I'm a functionality-first type person when it comes to the kitchen, YMMV)
