My computer is dead

Post by JongWK »

Yesterday night there was a storm. An electrical storm.

Today I powered up my computer. It didn't work at first, but after a few seconds there was a small flash of light and a "SNAP!" (*) from the tower.

This sucks in ways you can't even imagine. With my luck I'll be years before we can buy a new one.

(*) Or something like that.

Man, I was totally expecting the first line of this post to be:

"...Long live the computer."

But no such luck. So instead, I offer wuffles and static guard.

You might want to have a bit of a closer look, all components might not be dead. It would be silly to go out and buy a completely new one if you could salvage alot of parts.

Did it smell strange when you heard the "snap"? Have you looked and seen if you can see something that looks burned (or a component that has exploded)?

I met today with a friend, to see if the problem is limited to the power source or if the motherboard is gone. Sadly, we couldn't check it out, because it turns out it's an AT and he only had ATX power sources (or something like that). :(

An AT PSU? Just how old was the computer?

Pentium 3, 550 Mhz., 128 RAM, 10 Gb. Not exactly state-of-the-art, but enough to get the job done (and it was better than what I had until a couple years ago, a 486).
