80s Music

Post by Liniah »

Who here is not at least somewhat fond of the Talking Heads? In case you have trouble with names- Safety Dance, Same As It Ever Was, And She Was, Burning Down the House, Psycho Killer, etc, etc. Veed claims that he hates all 80s music and I think that's way too broad to be able to claim.

Also, I'm trying to make an 80s folder of mp3s. I already have some of the following: Cyndi Lauper, Go-Gos, Bangles, Talking Heads, and many others that I don't feel like typing all of. I recently lost a hard drive full of mp3s and am trying to remember if there was anything else on there that I need to redownload. Any suggestions of cool 80s music that I could be forgetting? Help me think of stuff. Opening Kazaa for me is like sitting down to write with that blank piece of paper staring at you making you forget everything that's in your head. Thanks.

<raises hand at Talking Heads>

Was "Sister Christian" in the 80's? That's a good one.

When you say "80's" music, what exactly do you mean? Some of today's artists were around back in the 80's producing music, but obviously their sounds have changed with the time.

And are you looking for titles, or artists? I'll toss a collection of some that I /think/ are 80's. I have a very bad time sense, so sometimes stuff that I think was released in the 80's was released earlier or later.

Murry Head - One Night in Bangkok
Poison - Unskinny Bop
Mr. Mister - Broken Wings
Mr. Mister - Kyrie
Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days
Wang Chung - Everybody Wang Chung tonight
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra
Supertramp - The Logical Song
INXS - I Need You Tonight

That's just a few ideas off the top of my head. What I might suggest you do, is visit one of Cox Radio's websites. They have their playlist on-line for the last 48 hours. Most of my music list is from going through their different stations looking at what's been played and then finding the songs I like. Here are a few right quick.....

http://daytonspoint.com/
http://birminghamspoint.com/
http://1069thepoint.com/

You can find more 80's stations, or pretty much any genre, here... http://coxradio.com/locations/

The stuff is broken up by Region. So go to a region, select a station, when you find a station in the genre you want click on details for that station (not the website). You'll see a list of details, and under "format" is a link to "all stations in this format".

Hope that helps.

Just for the sake of accuracy, Safety Dance was the one and only hit from Men Without Hats... not Talking Heads.

Never ever forget the most important 80's acts.

The Clash.

Alphaville.

And then of course, you have the German invasion as well.

Falco, Craftwerx, Nena...there's a fourth one I'm thinking, but I'm drawing a blank right now.

Oooh. Grifter can DJ my '80s party anytime.... that's a sweet playlist.

AH: Chicago definitely was both - they had a bunch of stuff in the '70s, and then a bunch of stuff in the '80s as well (including that annoying song from Karate Kid II). The Eagles also were big in both decades, but I think the Eagles were bigger in the '70s than the '80s. But I could be wrong. I was never good at the Match The Song To The Artist game.

Huey Lewis and the News, another major '80s standby. "I Want a New Drug", "Workin' for a Livin'", and a host of others that have suddenly fled my brain.

Why, thank you. I'd be honored. :) I started to become music-conscious in the early eighties, so I guess I've always had a bit of a soft spot for music of that decade. Ska was rather popular at the time as well, so you might want to add some songs from either Madness ( Baggy Trousers, House of Fun, One Step Beyond, Our House) or The Specials ( Ghost Town).
Further recommendations:
Level 42 - Running In the Family, Hot Water, Take Care Of Yourself, Lessons In Love
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf, Save A Prayer, Wild Boys, Union Of The Snake

Belinda Carlisle - Heaven is a Place on Earth
Poison - Every Rose has It's Thorn
Milli Vanilli - Blame it on the Rain
Tiffany - I think we're alone now
Michael Jackson - Thriller, among others
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Parents Just Don't Understand
John Cooger - Hurt So Good
Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistable

AC/DC, for christ's sake.

Bon Jovi. Slippery When Wet. C'mon.

Cherry Pie, Warrant; Panama, Van Halen; Hot For Teacher, ibid.; fuck, all of 1984. all of Appetite For Destruction. Carry On My Wayward Son, Kansas; Rocket, Def Leppard; Pour Some Sugar On Me, ibid.; Toto IV = Africa, Rosanna; and shit, don't forget the Air Supply.
There is then a need to guard against a temptation to overstate the economic evils of our own age, and to ignore the existence of similar, or worse, evils in earlier ages. Even though some exaggeration may, for the time, stimulate others, as well as ourselves, to a more intense resolve that the present evils should no longer exist, but it is not less wrong and generally it is much more foolish to palter with truth for good than for a selfish cause. The pessimistic descriptions of our own age, combined with the romantic exaggeration of the happiness of past ages must tend to setting aside the methods of progress, the work of which, if slow, is yet solid, and lead to the hasty adoption of others of greater promise, but which resemble the potent medicines of a charlatan, and while quickly effecting a little good sow the seeds of widespread and lasting decay. This impatient insincerity is an evil only less great than the moral torpor which can endure, that we with our modern resources and knowledge should look contentedly at the continued destruction of all that is worth having. There is an evil and an extreme impatience as well as an extreme patience with social ills.

Devo
They Might be Giants

I can't believe no one mentioned this group, with arguably the second most famous video of all time:

The Buggles (Video Killed the Radio Star)

(True story-- a very long time ago, I was flipping through the channels on this new thing we had gotten, called cable. I remember seeing this video come on, with some guy telling the world about how there was this new channel dedicated to this sort of thing. I can't remember if I actually saw MTV come on the air or not, but it was a damn close thing.)
