Shadowrun and DV8.

In the SST forum, users are free to discuss philosophy, music, art, religion, sock colour, whatever. It's a haven from the madness of Bulldrek; alternately intellectual and mundane, this is where the controversy takes place.

Shadowrun and DV8.

Post by Game Master »

Okay this is my attempt at trying to get Bulldrek to collectively gang bang Dennis into revising the Shadowrun Character Gnerator and make it not suck.

I mean look at what he has done in the past, Wired Reflexes is truely a master piece as far as Shadowrun websites go, hell as far as any website goes. So who better to do this?

The man has the skills, and he definitely has the specialized knowledge that comes from being a player and Game Master. So what I need all of you to do here is collectively beg with me, and see if we can't bamboozle the old Deevster into doing something we'd all benefit from.

Please note I haven't discussed this with him at all. He has in no way endorsed or approved of this prior to its posting, so if it really angers him, or embarasses him, I'm sorry in advance.

Allright disclaimers are over with, get the dick sucking going!!!!

Which one? You talking about NSRCG?

Yeah I think so. You know that uses a DAT file set up right? So the only thing that really needs to be changed is the front page right?

Paul gets in line.

Fuck yeah dude make that shit work.

OMG, I had totally forgotten about this thing. I used to send in all kinds of bug issues until I stopped seeing updates. Gawd I hated the "Out of Memory" or "Out of Resources" bugs. GGRRAAA!!!

Apparently a lot of those have been fixed, although I've never actually used it aside from looking at some of the BeCKS stuff, simply because I don't have the need for a chargen for SR. It has been updated untold numbers of times in the last year, though.

I used McMackie's NSRCG, linked to previously. The .dat files are, in my experience, without flaw, but the front end is completely mucked up. It's a valiant attempt, and I praise McMackie, but the fact is, it's broken, and does not work.

Like I told Paul last night, there's no one on the board more qualified to do this kind of database manipulation program than Dennis, and this is really a project which would help a lot of Shadowrun players. A lot of people want a character generator that's easy and quick, but they need one that /works./ They need one that's /useable./ Dennis has the skills, and the .dat files exist, reducing the amount of necessary work immensely. I know I would certainly appreciate /someone/ doing it, and he seems like the only man for the job.

So what sort of changes are we talking here, and Deev how willing would you be to tackle a project like this? And is there anyway I could help? i have no coding skills to speak of, but I will help where I can.

Well, I did all the DAT updates for the M&M stuff and resently some other things that I saw were missing here and there. So if you need help on that end I'd be happy to lend a hand.

GUIs...shudder....:D

Go for it, I've used it as a sanity checker once or twice, and broke it a lot (doesn't take kindly to randomly mucking about with its internals much), but I honestly have no use for it as an actual valid method of character construction.

Here's the problem; Between the time I spend on my own website, the time I spend preparing my sunday Shadowrun game, the time I spend with friends and loved ones, and the time I've got commited to my profession, I've got preciously little time left, and I've already promised Synner I'd help him develop the Shadows of Europe support website. So if this'll ever happen, it's going to take a while to get going, but I'll definitely put it on my "maybe list." I started work on a Call of Cthulhu Character Generator (CCCG) some time ago, and that system is infinitely simpler, so I've got a lot of the XML schemas and functionality still laying around for that, but I found that it was in incredible undertaking and one that deserves a lot of time and effort.

So in conclusion, I appreciate all of the praise and support you're offering, but I must really decline due to time constraints. I'm sorry to disappoint, but it's better to disappoint now, then to raise hopes and disappoint later.

You really don't want to see the results of coding half or all asleep. Ask Maelwys about his Excel character sheet :D

Oho? I take it that's where they're stashing the stuff that got cut for space reasons? Well they did run massively over wordcount. :)

OO... SoE ran over? My cup runneth over!

Say....we're just looking for a program to generate characters? does it have to be downlodable, or can it be run off of a website?

See I've got this class coming up next semester, where I have to make a fully-developed, massively programmed (in .NET, sadly) webpage. If I did this for a credit, I'd have a reason to do it (and not have the problems Deev has with time constraints). I can't say that the quality would be up to Deev's, but I'd sure as hell love to try. I technically can't pimp my site once i've written it, but if I pimp it BEFORE I do, they don't have anything to complain about. I can just say I was responding to a demand in the marketplace :)

(Business school rocks, they teach you all kinds of ways to use weasel-speak!)

Personally, I'd much rather see utilities that were useful in-game -- combat trackers, mapping systems, etc. Someone was working on a neat Flash application that handled mapping and combat, but it appears to have fallen offline.

Perhaps once I learn it, I'll feel better about it, but as it stands, I'm a LAMP guy... Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl/PHP.

My professor is all about MS, and he'll be teaching us all the niftyness in the first couple of weeks, so I might change my tune by then. I'm learning ASP right now (as server-side Java), and the ADO is kinda annoying (DSNs have never been my friend), so we'll see.

I'll definately keep my mind open, how's that?

If I have the time, I can maybe play with it. All of my experience is in Database Development, and while I'm probably not as qualified as Deev, I think I could fix it up a bit.

Sounds like a good idea. (Though I can't for the life of me get past how you would think LAMP matches the inherit power of .NET)

Anyway, everyone here seems to have my in high regard, and though I think you're all on crack, I'd be more than happy to advise and help out if and when I can.
