Love Songs

Post by JetPlane »

Favorite? The one you would/have get/gotten married to? The one you want to hear in your idealistic fantasy of love when your "soulmate" walks into the restaurant, sits down next to you and tells you the thing you've been wanting to hear forever(whatever that may be)?

For me: "At Last"-Etta James

Tounge-tied, bleary-eyed, Lord, I love this song.
To be loved, you must be lovable.

...to name but a few.

I was originally going to say that all the songs I listen to that could almost be considered "love songs" have a bitter and cynical vibe to them, and that I couldn't participate in this thread without ruining everyone's day. Then I remembered this song as I happened to listen to it just now. It's called "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea", by Neutral Milk Hotel. I doubt it's right on target, but it's sadly the closest thing to a love song I can think of right now. Other than She's An Angel, by They Might Be Giants. :D

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me

What a curious life
We have found here tonight
There is music that sounds from the street
There are lights in the clouds
Anna's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
Soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees

Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
And now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

I know it's not the one I mean to say, but Closer is the only thing that comes to mind.
There is then a need to guard against a temptation to overstate the economic evils of our own age, and to ignore the existence of similar, or worse, evils in earlier ages. Even though some exaggeration may, for the time, stimulate others, as well as ourselves, to a more intense resolve that the present evils should no longer exist, but it is not less wrong and generally it is much more foolish to palter with truth for good than for a selfish cause. The pessimistic descriptions of our own age, combined with the romantic exaggeration of the happiness of past ages must tend to setting aside the methods of progress, the work of which, if slow, is yet solid, and lead to the hasty adoption of others of greater promise, but which resemble the potent medicines of a charlatan, and while quickly effecting a little good sow the seeds of widespread and lasting decay. This impatient insincerity is an evil only less great than the moral torpor which can endure, that we with our modern resources and knowledge should look contentedly at the continued destruction of all that is worth having. There is an evil and an extreme impatience as well as an extreme patience with social ills.

There's a lot of personal history behind this particular song, which is why I like it so much.

The Fragile, by NIN
she shines
in a world full of ugliness
she matters
when everything is meaningless

fragile
she doesn't see her beauty
she tries to get away
sometimes
it's just that nothing seems worth saving
i can't watch her slip away

i won't let you fall apart

she reads the minds of all the people as they pass her by
hoping someone will see
if i could fix myself i'd -
but it's too late for me

i won't let you fall apart

we'll find the perfect place to go where we can run and hide
i'll build a wall and we can keep them on the other side
...but they keep waiting
...and picking...
...and...

it's something i have to do
i was there, too
before everything else
i was like you

This is really, really, really hard.

Five for Fighting's "Jainy" is, like Nick Cave's "Into My Arms," beautiful for it's simplicity. The stark regret and pain in the Beatles's "Yesterday" and Dave Matthew's "Grace is Gone" still kicks my ass. The frankness of Everclear's "Good Witch of the North" is incredible, and the conversational tone of "Otis Redding," still makes me wish -

I wish I could be like all my heroes;
I wish I could be like all yours, too.
I wish I could sing like Otis Redding.
I wish I could play this guitar in tune.

- that I wasn't blind, while the orchestra backing Art Alexakis's terrible voice on "Anabella's Song" is such a harsh contrast that it somehow fumbles towards beauty.

More later.

That'd be one of them. God I love her voice. Husky, powerful.

Another song would probably be Pale September by Fiona Apple. More with the husky and powerful.

For more laid back times, the song would be Cigarettes and Coffee by Otis Redding.

As for more formal songs, such as for a wedding, I want to see one that has Adagio for Strings playing in the background. The groom could play Elyas, kneeling with his arms spread while he was being pelted with rice.

Wedding songs?

Well, we had a friend sing a song from my old camp days during the ceremony, and then our first dance was to "Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie. Also, our recessional, since we couldn't find the credits score piece from Buckaroo Banzai, was "Movin' Right Along", also from The Muppet Movie.

It was the most incredible, sweetest thing - as Caz and I are dancing to the Muppets, I look around and all our friends are singing along to "Rainbow Connection". Bliss.

Shit. Now I'm getting all misty just thinkin' about it. Gotta go get a smoochie.

Okay, back.

My and Caz's songs?

"500 Miles" - The Proclaimers
"I Would Do Anything For Love" - Meatloaf (it wasn't really a decision, just every time we were together, it was always there. Very weird)
"Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" - Rupert Holmes
"Pennies From Heaven"
"It Had to Be You"
"Time After Time" - Cyndi Lauper
"Two Princes" - Spin Doctors

Hmmm. Dang, there's got to be something more recent. I just don't know what....

love? Yes, does lust count too?

Post by Vralkie »

love? Yes, does lust count too?...

Two songs that have immense meaning to me, both being sort-of-love-songs:

Eagle-eye cherry - come tomarrow

It was the last song that my first love and I listened to together as a couple. It just came on the radio as we were about to get on the plane back the the 'States. Three lines into the song we looked at eachother and understood that it isn't a depressing song afterall, we both knew where he was coming from and held oneanother for the length of the trip... (happy song)

Crazy town - Butterfly

It came on the radio about halfway through during my first time giving oral sex. I nearly busted out laughing, but can't hear it now without getting hungry... (happy song)
--
Steve- "...well, you've either had wayyyy too much, or not nearly enough"
[Vralkie]- "There's only one that we can do anything about, so here goes..."

I think my alltime favorite would be "Looking for Love", by Karen Ramirez. Other notables include "Before Today", by Everything But the Girl; "Protection" and "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" by Massive Attack; and, surprisingly, "The One" by Limp Bizkit.

Some more:

For some reason, I find "Under My Thumb" by the Stones to be a good love song, in a really weird way. Don't read TOO much into it though ;)

"October Song" by Bif Naked.

"Love Machine" by the Cardigans.

Mad seconds for "Nothing Else Matters" and "Who Wants To Live Forever" :)

"Everlong" by Foo Fighters.

"Sabbra Caddabra" (the cover by Metallica)

"Black Black Heart"- David Usher + las chica from My Brilliant Beast... the version that has the most of her vocals :)

"Oh What A Night" by the 4 Seasons, for a classic, as well as "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison.

"Linger" by the Cranberries

"This One Goes Out To The One I Love" by REM

"Breathless" by the Corrs. It's cheesy as fuck, but there's history, so it gets lumped in ;)

George Micheal performed a version of it at the show they did in memory of Freddie Mercury. It's not bad, but no cigar to the original, of course.

I must also say, "Promises" by the Cranberries still manages to get me teary-eyed... well, at least makes me think about the last time I was teary-eyed. Or remniscient of teary-eyed. Still. ;)

Two favorites that I can't believe no one has mentioned:

Truly Madly Deeply-Savage Garden
I'll be your dream I'll be your wish
I'll be your fantasy
I'll be your hope I'll be your love
Be everything that you need
I'll love you more with every breath
Truly, madly, deeply do
I will be strong I will be faithful 'cause I'm counting on

A new beginning
A reason for living
A deeper meaning

I want to stand with you on a mountain
I want to bathe with you in the sea
I want to lay like this forever
Until the sky falls down on me

And when the stars are shining brightly in the velvet sky,
I'll make a wish to send it to heaven
Then make you want to cry
The tears of joy for all the pleasure in the certainty
That we're surrounded by the comfort and protection of
The highest powers
In lonely hours
The tears devour you
I want to stand with you on a mountain
I want to bathe with you in the sea
I want to lay like this forever
Until the sky falls down on me
Oh can you see it baby?
You don't have to close your eyes
'Cause its standing right here before you
All that you need will surely come

I'll be your dream I'll be your wish
I'll be your fantasy
I'll be you hope I'll be your love
Be everything that you need
I'll love you more with every breath
Truly, madly deeply do

I want to stand with you on a mountain
I want to bathe with you in the sea
I want to lay like this forever
Until the sky falls down on me

Careless Whisper-Wham!Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind, ignorance is kind
there's no comfort in the truth
pain is all you'll find

Should've known better

I feel so unsure
as I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
as the music dies, something in your eyes
calls to mind the silver screen
and all its sad good-byes

I'm never gonna dance again
guilty feet have got no rhythm
though it's easy to pretend
I know your not a fool

Should've known better than to cheat a friend
and waste the chance that I've been given
so I'm never gonna dance again
the way I danced with you

Time can never mend
the careless whispers of a good friend
to the heart and mind
ignorance is kind
there's no comfort in the truth
pain is all you'll find

I'm never gonna dance again
guilty feet have got no rhythm
though it's easy to pretend
I know your not a fool

Should've known better than to cheat a friend
and waste this chance that I've been given
so I'm never gonna dance again
the way I danced with you

Never without your love

Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things we'd want to say

We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But noone's gonna dance with me
Please stay

And I'm never gonna dance again
guilty feet have got no rhythm
though it's easy to pretend
I know your not a fool

Should've known better than to cheat a friend
and waste the chance that I've been given
so I'm never gonna dance again
the way I danced with you

(Now that you're gone) Now that you're gone
(Now that you're gone) What I did's so wrong
that you had to leave me alone
To be loved, you must be lovable.

pull that dead thread back to life!

anyway, for me, it's a sadder song that always does it. M. Doughty: You Lucky Dog

Did you love me or
did you just love me back?
I'm on this
van gone to Baltimore
I'll add it to the stack
of places
I've gone to crouch and seek some shelter from your name.
Long distance just to hear your voice on the machine

really subdued song, especially for M. Doughty (formerly Soul Coughing). guy just can't get a girl out of his head, no matter what.

Indigo Swing -- (Today's the Day) I'm Glad I'm Not Dead

I met a new girl today
And she suits me to a "T"'
I gotta go right away
'Cause she's waiting there for me
By the train she is waiting
Waiting for me to come 'round the corner
I gotta get going, Fred
'Cause today's the day I'm glad I'm not dead

We met on the avenue
I was nervous as could be
I didn't know what to do
'Cause she was smiling back at me
On the curb she was smiling
Smiling at me like she knew she knew me
I gotta get going, Fred
'Cause to day's the day I'm glad I'm not dead

Oh, I declare today's not like the other days
Livin' life in the same old forgetful ways
Spin the wheel and you'll see how your number plays
Comin' round to me

I wanted to walk her home
And I hoped that she'd agree
Never to be alone
So she's waiting there for me
By the train she is waiting
Waiting for me to come 'round the corner
I gotta get going, Fred
'Cause today's the day I'm glad I'm not dead
A high I.Q. is like a jeep. You'll still get stuck; you'll just be farther from help when you do.

'Sorry I Am' - Ani DiFranco

I'm sorry I didn't sound more excited on the phone
I'm sorry that after all these years
I've left you feeling unrequited and alone, brought you to tears
I guess I never loved you quite as well as the way you loved me
I guess I'll never really be able to tell you how sorry
I am

And I don't know what it is about you
I just know it's not what it was
I don't know why red fades before blue it just does
and I don't know what it is about me
that I just can't keep still
I keep thinking someday I will make this all up to you
and maybe someday I will

I guess I never loved you quite as well
as the way you loved me
I guess I'll never really be able to tell you how sorry
I am
sorry I am
sorry I am
sorry I am

*runs a hot bath and readies the razor blades*

That has to be the most depressing 'love song' ever. It's not even a love song! It's a "Ya, sorry, but" *dutch shrug*

One time I built a matter transporter, but things got screwed up (long story, lol) and I ended up turning into a kind of half-human, half-housefly monstrosity.

"Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor.

Though I retain a fondness for "Look Away" by Chicago.

Secret rule of the Universe #682 --- After breaking up with your boyfriend/girlfriend... sometime within the 3 hours following that break-up you will hear a song by Chicago. "Look Away" being the most common one you will hear.
