Comic Books
Okay not that I'd ever undertake an illegal action online, but say I was broke and wanted to preview some comic books where would I get them? It seems some of the first names that come to mind either don't have them, or I lack the intuition to figure out how to find them.

I rarely use anything but btjunkie to find anything, but another useful resource is the google. A carefully-crafted search phrase helps a great deal: specifically, if you put "filetype:torrent" in the search field [along with your search term], you'll get nothing but .torrent files. So if you search for "galactus filetype:torrent" [not in quotes, mind you], you'll get these 135 torrents with Galactus in their names.
It's worth pointing out that Google's autosearch thing, where it searches as you type, gets quiet when you start searching for porn, warez - there's a term from yesterday - or anything else they think someone out there might not like. You can still search it, mind you, but you have to hit Enter first. That way, Google doesn't have to feel guilty for helping you ruin the industry you're stealing from, or for getting you your daily fill of cock and ball torture videos: that Enter, you see, makes the blame all yours.

You know, there's got to be a cheat sheet around that shows all these functions, but I've never thought to look for one. I remember when I was a graphic designer, we used to just randomly try keyboard shortcuts in Pagemaker, until we found a cheat sheet online, which revolutionized our use of the program.

Well, I think the question of how best to steal comic books online has been answered pretty well, so let me ask you this: what's good, comic-wise, these days? I love comics, but don't have the energy to follow them regularly, and, with the big titles, shit just gets so scattered, that I find it maddening trying to figure out where to jump in. So, is there anything that's come out recently [or, hell, not recently] that anyone considers top-shelf material, or just worth reading?

Ultimate Spider-Man, if you like supers. Especially since Bagley is back on the art now, which fuck yeah.AtemHutlrt wrote:Well, I think the question of how best to steal comic books online has been answered pretty well, so let me ask you this: what's good, comic-wise, these days? Not that Bagley doesn't have his issues (the dude's incapable of drawing teenagers as anything other than small adults; Mary Jane's rack, QED) but I prefer it to both the blockier style from the guy immediately after him (whose name slips my mind) and the anime-lite style of Lafuente.

Hmmm. I've never really read any Green Lantern stuff, though I very much like the concept of the Green Lantern. I might check that out.Serious Paul wrote:Well I'd suggest you look over the Darkest Night stuff, which is a green lantern story that doesn't suck. As always, the Walking Dead is a good read. But I am afraid i am a few months behind on my reads right now.

Not sure where Ultimate Spiderman is at issue wise in recent months, but pound for pound as i think about it the series is THE best reinvention of a series ever.
As I was thinking, an older series that's a pretty good read would be Y: The Last Man. Aalso look over Fables, Invincible, DMZ, and maybe the Loser's first 25 or so issues. Depending on your tastes 100 Bullets is an okay read. I actually like Batman Superman by DC. It's a comic super-heroic romp book that wildly varies in quality, but is a great stand alone read. You don't have to know jack about them, or the DC universe to have fun, but there are some inside jokes too.

I read Irredeemable recently, and thought it was great. Actually, I think a few issues may have come out since I last checked. Gotta look into that. I also read a bit of Astro City, and thought it was decent. I'd read more of that if it was convenient.

I'd strongly disagree with that opinion (save the stuff with Doc Ock at the very end), but there have been a couple of really good arcs since then.Jeff Hauze wrote:Did Ultimate Spider-Man get better? Because it was sucking donkey cock right around the whole Ultimate Clone Saga thing, and I stopped reading at that point.

I'll echo the praise for Irredeemable, but I think it's sister title Incorruptible is much more interesting by comparison.
Other than that, I would highly recommend checking out Orc Stain and Chew, which are both rather bizarre comics with a toehold in the mainstream. Orc Stain by James Stokoe takes place on a planet full of orcs, while Chew is about a detective with a psychic sense of taste in a world where bird flue caused chicken to be banned in America and the FDA gained tremendous law enforcement powers...yes, they both get weirder and sillier than that.
On the more serious side, The Boys is entering a new story arc with issue 51 that looks to be really good, and Scalped continues to be perhaps the best HBO-series-waiting-to-happen of comics.
